Early days in Stark County, OH, including the communities of Canton, Massillon, Alliance, Mount Union, Minerva, Canal Fulton, Greentown, Louisville, Waynesburg, Wilmot, Limaville, North Lawrence, Navarre, Beach City, Mapleton, New Berlin, New Franklin, Osnaburg, Uniontown, Magnolia and Marlboro, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this NEW 33 Page Booklet reprinted from the 1892 Centennial edition of Henry Howe's Historical Collections of Ohio, The Ohio Guide (a WPA Writers Project), and other Hard-to-find sources. The spiral-bound booklet is printed one-sided on 60# paper with the fine print enlarged or easier reading. A sheet of clear vinyl has been added to protect the front cover. Among the many and diverse topics covered in the booklet are: the First Moravian Missionary in Ohio; Indian Encounters; Canton Public Square; a Parrot's Influence; Ginseng, Beeswax or Money; Canton's Lost Opportunities; the Collapse of the Alliance Opera Building: and Mt. Union College. GENEALOGY BUFFS will find a list of 1888 county officers and businesses, and biographies of John Saxton and Archibald McGregor, news editors; Major (later President) William McKinley; John Hancock Klippart; Gen. Isaac R. Sherwood; Joseph Medill, editor-in-chief of the Chicago Tribune; Lyman Humphrey, govenor of Kansas and first proclaimer of Labor Day; and Gen. Charles F. Manderson. The Howe history covers the development of this area until about 1890, while excerpts from the WPA book, give a nostalgic glympse from a 1940 vantage point, including interesting historical notes, especially as they relate to sightseeing possibilities. A 1933 look at the turbulent history of newspapers in Stark County, brief sketches on Mt.
