Early days in PORTAGE County, OH, including the communities of Ravenna, Kent, Deerfield, Hiram, Garrettsville, Edinburg, Mantua, Mantua Station, Palmyra, Randolph and Windham, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this NEW 19 Page Booklet reprinted from the 1892 Centennial edition of Henry Howe's Historical Collections of Ohio and other sources. The spiral bound booklet is printed single-sided on 60# paper, with the fine print enlarged for easier reading. A sheet of clear vinyl has been added to protect the front cover. Among the many and diverse topics covered: the Cheese Industry; Early Settlements and Incidents; an Indian incident in Deerfield; early Palmyra Settlers; Benjamin Tappan Jr., first Ravenna settler; the Haymaker family and Aaron Burr; the Pioneer Railroad; Capt. Samuel Brady's Leap across the Cuyahoga, and Joseph Smith tarred and feathered. GENEALOGY BUFFS will find a list of 1888 county officers and businesses, including biographical information on several prominent citizens: Gen. Louis Fairchild, Fiobus Plimpton, journalist/poet, A. G. Riddle, lawyer/author; Marvin Kent, manufacturer/ railroad official, and Mrs. Fannie Ward, authoress. A brief 1933 look at the history of newspapers in the county, a short item on the Hiram College from a 1941 Ohio history, a map showing the 88 Ohio counties and a map of 1805 Ohio are also included..
