About This Item

1892. Early days in Hancock County, OH, and its communities -- Findlay, Mt. Blanchard, McComb, Arcadia, Van Ive, Van Buren and Benton Ridge -- are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this NEW 16 Page Booklet of excerpts reproduced directly from the 1892 Centennial edition of Henry Howe's Historical Collections of Ohio, The Ohio Guide (a 1940 WPA Writers project), and other hard-to-find sources. The spiral-bound booklet is printed one-sided on 60# paper with the fine print enlarged for easier reading. A sheet of clear vinyl has been added to protect the front cover. Among the many and diverse topics covered in the booklet are: Fort Findlay, built during the war of 1812, Gen. James Findlay, Wilson Vance, the first white settler, Blanchard's Fork, the good Count Coffinberry, Dr. Charles Oesterlen - the "gas fool," the great Karg well, the sight, sound and smell of a burning well, speculation in the gas belt, and the Great Natural Gas Jubilee of 1887 with 40,000 attendees. GENEALOGY BUFFS will find a list of 1888 county officers and businesses. The Howe history covers the development of this area until about 1890, while excerpts from the WPA book, give a nostalgic glympse from a 1940 vantage point, including interesting historical notes, especially as they relate to sightseeing possibilities. A 1933 look at the history of newspapers in the county, a map showing the 88 Ohio counties and a map of 1805 Ohio are also included. . Limited Edition Reprint. Spiral/Comb . New/No Jacket. Illus. by Henry Howe. 8.5" x 11". Private Press.
