Early days in BROWN COUNTY, OH, including Georgetown, Ripley, Higgensport, Russellville, Aberdeen and Fayetteville, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this NEW 23 Page Booklet reprinted from the 1892 edition of Henry Howe's Historical Collections of Ohio and other hard-to-find sources. The spiral-bound booklet is one-sided on 60# paper with the print enlarged 10% for easier reading. Among the many and diverse topics in the booklet are: the Battle with Tecumseh, "White Burley" tobacco, General Thomas Lyon Hamer, the boyhood home of General Ulysses S. Grant and recollections of his parents and friends, the underground railroad headed by the Rev. John Rankin, with such famous "passengers" as Eliza and George Harris, two of the runaway slaves depicted in "Uncle Tom's Cabin", the Rev. Martin Kundig, founder of Ursuline Convent, and Archbishop John R. Purcell. Additional insight on Grant from an 1869 book, Sunshine and Shadows in New York City, has been added. GENEALOGY BUFFS will find a list of 1888 county officers and businesses. A 1933 look at the history of newspapers in the county; excerpts from The Ohio Guide, a WPA writer's project published in 1940; an article on Ohio's tobacco farming; Henry Howe's rambling account of his Ohio River journey (from the Allen County section of Howe's book), a map showing the 88 Ohio counties and a map of 1805 Ohio are also included in the booklet. .
