Worcester: Dorr, Howland & Co. The early days of Suffolk County, Massachusetts, which encompasses the Greater Boston Area, is recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this NEW 74 Page Booklet, reprinted primarily from the 1839 edition of Historical Collections of Massachusetts by John Warner Barber. The spiral-bound booklet is printed on 60# paper, with the print enlarged for easier reading. Clear vinyl sheets have been added to protect the covers. INSERTED IN THE BOOKLET is a copy of the Map of Massachusetts which accompanied the Barber book. The map is printed in black ink on natural parchtex paper. Among the many and diverse subjects in the booklet are: Early contacts with Indians; Early Descriptions of the Area; Early Roads, Bridges, Canals and Railroads; the House of Industry, Correction and Reformation; the Maverick Hotel; City Finances in 1837; Schools and other Institutions; the New England Institution for the Education of the Blind; Theatres; Massachusetts Historical Society; the Boston Atheneum (library); Churches; the First Newspaper in America; the Boston Massacre of 1770; the Boston Tea Party, Washington Takes Boston, and many other interesting bits of history and trivia. Names mentioned include: John Hancock, Samuel Adams, William Molineux, William Phillips, Joseph Warren, Joshua Henshaw, Samuel Pemberton, Miss Mary Belknap, John McLean, Samuel Maverick, Rev. William Blackstone, Gov. Winthrop, Deputy Gove. Dudley, Rev. John Cotton, James Perkins, Peter Faneuil, James Otis Jr., John Campbell, Rev. Cotton Mather, Benjamin Franklin, Crispus Attucks, Samuel Gray, James Caldwell, and Patrick Carr.
