New York City: Pudney & Russell Early days in the Georgia counties of Elbert, Hart, Lincoln and Wilkes are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this spiral-bound booklet reprinted from two rare books: the Rev. George White's Historical Collections of Georgia and Georgia, a Guide to Its Towns and Countryside, a WPA publication. The NEW 36 page booklet is printed one-sided on 60# paper with the print enlarged for easier reading. A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the three-color front cover. Past and/or present area communities include: (Not necessarily named in the booklet.) Elbert - Bowman, Dewy Rose, Elberton (co. seat), Ruckersville, Middleton, Petersburg. Hart -- Bowersville, Canon (part), Hartwell (co. seat), Royston (part). Lincoln -- Goshen, Leathersville, Lincolnton (co. seat), Lisbon. Wilkes -- Danburg, Philomath, Royle, Tignall, Washington (co. seat) The excerpt from White's book covers the development of this area until its publication date of 1854, while excerpts from the WPA book, give a nostalgic glympse from a 1940 vantage point, including interesting historical notes, especially as they relate to sightseeing possibilities. Among the many and diverse topics in the booklet are: Early Settlers; Physical features; 1850 Census Extract; Ancient Mound; Instances of Longevity, Indian attacks, rescues and escapes; colorful tales two remarkable women during the Revolutionary War period -- Nancy Hart, who captured Tories with vittles and soap, and Hannah Clarke, wife of General Elijah Clarke; Prominent citizens, including Captain James Jack, the Rev. Campbell, General Elijah Clarke, General Samuel Blackburn, Mrs. Sarah Hillhouse (first woman newspaper editor in the South), Eliza Frances Andrews (author of War Time Diary of a Georgia Girl), and others; the Rev. Beverly Allen's flight from justice; Battle of Kettle Creek (Revolutionary War); Gen. Clarke's dispute with Governor Matthews; the Shockley apple and other agriculture items; old houses in Elberton and Washington, Smyrna Church; Eli Whitney Workshop, Heard's Fort; Colonel Earle Norman's Plan; Gen.
