About This Item
Edinburgh: John Mosman, 1722. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good +. 16mo (about 10cm x 16cm), [10], x, 140pp. Collated complete per ESTC listing (T117242). A crisp, clean, sound copy, bound in slightly later 18th century full diced calf, with gilt borders and edges. Rebacked (recently) to style, with gilt compartments and red morocco spine label. Contemporary marbled endpapers, with bookplate of noted Scottish lawyer Thomas Dawson Brodie. A partially legible inscription on the verso of the front free endpaper contains some family history, which appears to connect at least one previous owner of this book to the events described therein, but it is too messy for us to read clearly. A few 19th century news clippings relating to the contents are pasted to blank endleaves, not obscuring any content. Though wanting its original endleaves, the text is complete, and sound and clean, at that, with only a few contemporary ownership markings to the title page. Overall very good or better. Scarce in recent commerce, with just a handful of auction appearances in the past half century. The book's title is a reference to the "Standard of the Crafts Within the Burgh of Edinburgh," supposedly the flag presented by King James III of Scotland to the Edinburgh craftsmen who had rescued him from Edinburgh Castle during the Anglo-Scottish Wars of the late 15th century. ESTC T117242.

We travel throughout Ohio, western Pennsylvania and New York, southern Michigan, and eastern Indiana, and will travel farther in some cases to look at whole libraries or even just a few particularly interesting books.
