About This Item

Manuscript.. Guatemala Estados Unidos de Centro America - Historia compuesta por Miguel de Prado. Havana 1815. 25 folios numbered from 1 to 21, 23-25, and 27, without numbering 22 or 26, although the folios are complete. Unbound, some pages sewn, with a loose thread.

This manuscript from 1815 was written during the period of the Kingdom of Guatemala, which territorially encompassed what is now Chiapas and Soconusco, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. Spain was occupied by the French, and in the Kingdom of Guatemala, the Spanish constitution had been suspended. In 1815, the independence movements continued, which were carried out peacefully, unlike other places in America. In the handwritten booklet, the author Miguel de Prado provides an interesting and thorough analysis of Guatemala in 1815, covering not only its geography, which is also extensive, but also its population, and customs, and even expressing his own opinions.

He begins with a brief history, continues with the geographical location, describing the city of Guatemala as 'Guatemalan,' mentioning the products that are traded and the indigenous population: "Los indios de Guatemala son muy numerosos, unos están civilizados en cierto modo, y otros son salvages. Los principales son los Quiches, los Zaucas, los Moscos, los Poyais, los Changuenes y los Zambos", ("The indigenous people of Guatemala are very numerous; some are civilized to a certain extent, while others are wild. The main groups are the Quiches, the Zaucas, the Moscos, the Poyais, the Changuenes, and the Zambos"). He details the natural resources, flora, and fauna within the territory of Guatemala and its coastlines. The narration by author Miguel Prado provides a clear idea of what Guatemala was like in 1815.
