Paris: Roger Dion, 1959. Original wraps. Very good +. Quarto size, 780 pp., in French, inscribed by the author. This book offers a unique study of the history of winemaking in France: with an emphasis on geography and the social influences on the development of different wines, the book treats winemaking with a humanistic approach, connecting the process to the broader movements of civilization while also providing a solid history of vineyards and winemaking in France. The book covers many different regions in France, and includes black-and-white maps marked with the various vineyards that populate the area, as well as specifc grapes that are grown there. Towards the back of the book are a series of photographs of different vineyards and landscapes. The volume is in original paper wrappers with most signatures unopened, in the traditional French style.
