Wear to extremities (chiefly to spine edges and corners); slight scuffing, rubbing and browning to covers (leather over boards; chiefly at edges); tear to midsection of front free endpaper; previous owner's markings (chiefly rubberstamps on front free endpaper and title page, plus few pencil markings in text); slight internal browning to edges and endpapers. xxiii, [1], 599 pages + plate. Text in French. Later issue ('Troisieme Edition'; title page recto) of the biographical study of the devoted early North African early Christian saint (fl. 4th century CE), most famous as the mother of Augustine (later Bishop of Hippo and a saint in his own right). With the Abbe's preface to the second edition (dated July 29, 1866), plus supplementary notes (with bibliographical references) and a table of contents at rear. See BMC, volume 3, page 1068, column 578 (citing the original 1866 edition). Bound in half brown calf over dark maroon marbled boards, gilt-decorated spine with gilt-stamped red morocco spine label, plain endpapers, all edges trimmed and flecked red. Still a nice, tight copy internally, despite some apparent flaws.1 Engraved Illustration (frontispiece portrait).
