About This Item

1772 World Superstitions & Customs Japan Florida Hottentot Cortez Egypt Orville

Andre-Guillaume Contant de Orville was an 18th-century French author who, among his numerous stage-works and novels, wrote a history of the people of the world. 'History of the Different Peoples of the World' was first published in 1770 and was a compendium of descriptions of religious ceremonies and rites, superstitions and demonology, cultural customs, and civil life from countries all over the world. Orville focuses on major world powers such as Japan, Turkey, China, Persia, India, Egypt, English and even early settlements in Florida! Interestingly, this work includes accounts of Cortez conquests and Hottentot paganism. Additionally, within are 24 engravings portraying the events described throughout.
