A crisp, clean copy, very near fine, with a tiny smudge at the top edge, and the spine just a tinge cocked and faded. In the publisher's slipcase, fine. This is number 58 of 195 limited copies SIGNED by Roth on the limitation page. A very nicely produced edition. This copy with a typed letter from publisher Barnard Taylor to an old friend. The letter, of 35 lines, discusses in significant detail the origins of this book. Taylor notes that the woman in the story is based on Roth's first wife. He adds: "She had problems, of course, but Roth can be difficult to live with as see his divorce from Claire Bloom! Who would leave Claire for God's Sake!!! One of the scarcest limited editions of Roth's (there was no trade edition - only this signed one), especially since it is believed not all the copies of this edition were bound and completed. 8vo red silk cloth with morocco leather spine.
