Boston: Geo. C. Rand & Avery. Good with no dust jacket. 1856. Hardcover. 22mm loss of cloth at head of spine, 12mm loss of cloth at tail of spine. 12mm loss of cloth along edges of corners of boards. Previous owners' signatures on front endpaper, including "Edward C. Starr, Utica, N. Y. July 2, 1938". Internally very good. Some foxing. ; 1856 edition, uncommon. (The first edition of this work was published in 1854 with the imprint Boston: Charles Waite, 1854). 224 pages. Frontispiece is a full page "Map of Northern Orissa" (within the pagination). 33 illustrations within the pagination, some full page. Illustrations include several of Hindu gods. Original blind-stamped red cltoh boards with gilt lettering and decoration on spine. Blind-stamped eagle on wreath illustration on both boards. Page dimensions: 168 x 106mm. This 1856 edition has an added "Appendix - 1854" on pages 217-224. Pages (215-216) have musical notation for two Hindu hymns, with English translation provided below the music. .
