Engraved allegorical headpiece at the start of the text; ornamental initials. Text mostly in German Gothic/Fraktur letter, with some Latin. Sections with old damp stain, foxing, and browning. Thick 4to. 220 mm. Some copies have an added engraved title page, not present here. Balthasar de Monconys (1611-1665) was a French diplomat, physician and a magistrate, who left a diary of his trips visitin Jesuit missions in infidel territory. He travelled to Portugal, England, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. His writings about tobacco and its medicinal uses are especially interesting. Grasse IV p. 574; Arents Tobacco Collection S 399.
