Lampell began his career as a singer and songwriter forming the folk troupe The Almanac Singers which included Pete Seeger, Lee Hayes & Woody Guthrie. They were members of the Popular Front which included the CPUSA. He refused to testify before HUAC and was blacklisted but continued to write screenplays under a pseudonym.
