London: Author, 1939. typescript signed. Leaf. Very Good +. TLS of "Herman Melville" Signed by the poet, W.H. Auden, n.d., on two typed sheets consisting of 7 stanzas and one line. In this penetrating poem about Herman Melville, Auden blended psychosexual insights, aspects of Christian Agape, and biographical tidbits about the author, who--with Hawthorne--was one of the great literary depth-psychologists of New England Puritanism. John Fuller, W.H. Auden: A Commentary, discusses this poem (p.259): observing that Auden also "brilliantly" discussed psychoanalytic implications of Moby Dick in The Enchafèd Flood (1950). Faint indication of a rusty paperclip at the top of the first sheet.
