Wear and rubbing to edges of boards with tears on corners of panels and head and heel of spine. Also some bumping to head and heel of spine and corners of panels. Covers are scuffed and have a few light smudges. Spine is browned. Page edges are browned. 251 pages with illustrations and few footnotes. A look at a few of the more puzzling events in history like the destruction of the USS Maine, the death of Lord Kitchener, the fate of James graham, Marquis of Montrose, and other happenings.

The panels of the dust jacket are detached, darkened & heavily chipped with pieces out & soiling to the front panel. The flaps are partially detached & what is left of the jacket spine is laid in. Half-title, title, [1] leaf, 250 & [1] pages. 8 black-and-white plates, including a frontispiece. Good, in the remnants of the dust wrapper. <p>First edition.<p>Accounts of such historical mysteries as the disappearance of Austrian Archduke John Orth, the identity of the foundling of Nuremberg and the fate of the "Maine".
