Paris: Firmin Didot, 1870. Slipcased. G, All volumes have general shelf wear corner/edge damagegeneral. Shelf wear to book and slipcase, Interrior fold out boxes all have minor wear. All volumes have damage where spine connects to cover. Vol 1 part of label detached on book spine, joints starting to wear, pencil inscription on FFEP All bookblocks have age toning. Interior pages have general age toning. interior pages otherwise very clean.. Marbled paper boards with red leather spine label on both book and slipcase spines. Each volume in fold out box in inside slipcase. Gilt lettering and border on labels. Ex-libris plates on front pastedown of all volumes. B&W plates throughout, some folded. Brown slipcase. French with occasional Latin. All volumes paginated seperately. (7 Volumes). From the libraries of Joseph Hodges Choate (1832-1917) and his daughter Mabel Choate (1870-1958). Joseph was an American lawyer and diplimat known for serving as UK ambassador under Presidents McKinley and Roosevelt, playing a rule in the Kansas prohibition and Chinese exclusion cases, and playing a role in the founding of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, while Mabel was an accomplished horticulturist, traveller, preservationist, and art collector. The book features plates depicting architecture and interior decoration from excavated buildings in Pompeii and Herculaneum. Includes explanatory text by L. Barre. Each volume in slipcase and fold out box.
