About This Item

Garden City: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1951. First Edition. This copy presumed to be the author's own copy, with his bookplate affixed and the bookplate signed by both Kenneth Roberts and Henry Gross. With a number of full page illustrations from photographs throughout. 8vo, publisher's original tan cloth, the spine with black lettering label gilt and with the dowsing rod in black on the upper cover. [viii], 310 pp. A very good copy, the black of the lettering label and the gilt a bit rubbed, otherwise a pleasing, clean and tight copy well preserved. FIRST EDITION WITH THE AUTHOR'S OWN BOOKPLATE SIGNED BY KENNETH ROBERTS AND HENRY GROSS. In the author's words, "This book is an account, for future records and for the encouragement of those fortunate persons able to feel within themselves the stirring of the force that moves a dowsing rod, of the experiences and the sudden widening of dowsing power..." And as Coert du Bois of the U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Army Engineers wrote, "I couldn't have brought myself to believe the experiments recorded in this book unless, before reading it, I had traveled through Maine with Henry Gross and Kenneth Roberts and seen Henry's rod tell him all the details of water veins that we would find on hilltops seventy miles away."
A pleasing work with fine provenance and association.
