About This Item
5 Bloomsbury Square, London: The Fanfrolico Press, 1927. Cloth. Very Good. LIMITED EDITION, SIGNED BY AUTHOR, 386 of 500. 4to in 8s, pp. [viii], 221, [1]. Red buckram, gilt stamped lettering to spine. Edges deckled. Spine slightly cocked, pushing to spine ends. Signed and numbered by Jack Lindsay in sepia pen on limitation page. Edges, front and rear gently foxed, occasional grubby fingerprints. Else, clean and bright. In the original dust jacket, illustrated, in typical erotic-style, by Norman Lindsay: tanned, grubby and spotted, edgewear and creasing, head of spine frayed, a number of closed tears. Nevertheless, a grand copy, unusual in the dust jacket. Very good/ good+ Co-editor of Australia's first (anti-modernist) "little magazine" Vision (1923-4) by 1926 Jack Lindsay (1900-1990) was living in Bloomsbury attempting to "promote [his father, the artist] Norman Lindsay's notion of a sexually utopian Australian renaissance" to the British, and having re-established John Kirtley's hand-press, the Fanfrolico Press. Liquidated in 1930, due to Lindsay's bankruptcy, the press' " ultimate legacy was scholarly literary erotica". Lindsay went on to have a prolific and variegated writing career "overall he created fascinating syntheses throughout his works, but left a magnificent ruin" and is remembered as a distinguished man of letters for English-speaking communism (ODNB).
