The heartsong is a song that is sung by the elders to connect them to the spirits of the land. Elk is determined to learn the heartsong and become the best hunter in his tribe. Along the way, he meets many people who help him on his journey, including his father, the chief of his tribe, and the great hunter, Bear. Synopsis

James Welch is the author of four previous novels, including Fools Crow , which won the American Book Award and the Los Angeles Times Book Award. He attended schools on the Blackfeet and Fort Belknap reservations and studied writing under the legendary teacher Richard Hugo. He lives with his wife in Missoula, Montana.
