About This Item
London, New York, and Bombay: Longmans, Green and Co., 1896. One of Haggard's "Lost City" books that one could say defined the genre. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First English Edition (the US edition came out in the previous year). Dark blue cloth binding, beveled at the edges; with gilt titling on the spine and front cover. Clean text; 347 pages; with a 24-page publisher's catalog in the rear. The endpapers are a shiny black, an unusual choice. There is a frontis illustration, and fourteen others, by Amy Sawyer (1863-1945). The spine has faded to brown, but the gilt remains very bright. There is a contemporary (1897) signature on the second free endpaper; the first has been clipped. There is a cracked hinge at Page 208 - the only real defect, but it is holding well. A solid copy that presents very nicely.. First UK Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. Illus. by Amy Sawyer. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
