Chronicle of a four-year expedition to Melanesia in attempt to document the lives of the "primitive" tribes living in the Solomon Islands, in 416 pages with map endpapers in front + scattered pen-and-ink illustrations & stunning black-and-white full-page photos of various tribespeople throughout text. At the urging of Margaret Mead, the photos were subsequently displayed at various museums around the USA; this book represented their first presentation to the public. A FIRST EDITION, First Printing, from 1942, this hardcover small octavo has rust-colored cloth over boards stamped with a native head in black to front & lettered in black to spine. Condition is VG+: very clean, binding strong & straight, pages modestly tanned, heavier to edges, but completely unmarked. Hinges secure. Slight offsetting to endpapers No DJ (missing).
