About This Item

New York: Harcourt, Brace Jovanovich, Publishers, 1982. First U.S. edition and first printing. Hardcover. A slim book from the winner of the 1999 Nobel Prize in Literature. Translated by Ralph Manheim. Although not noted this copy came from the library/estate of literary and cultural critic John Leonard and he creased the top corner of numerous pages and made some brackets and marks throughout the text for his New York Times review. Thus this is a very good copy in a very good dust jacket with light wear. An interesting copy with a nice provenance.

Synopsis

Harm and Dörte Peters, the quintessential couple, are on vacation in Asia. But wherever they are, they can't get away from the political upheaval back home. With irony and wit, Grass takes aim at capitalism, communism, religion-even reproduction; nothing escapes unscathed. Translated by Ralph Manheim. A Helen and Kurt Wolff Book
