About This Item
St. Paul, MN and Bozeman, MT: Haynes Inc., 1916-1966. Duodecimo. Twenty-three in illustrated wrappers, six in green cloth - one in blue - with uniform illustrated paper labels. Set contains all editions for that time frame (#30-64) save #s 31-32, 38, 42 and 48.1957 volume signed by Haynes and his wife, Isabel; 1959 volume signed by Jack alone. All except the 1916 volume contain a tipped-in, fold-out map; nine include the Haynes Library bookplate with image of Mount Haynes. Frontispieces include the Giant Geyser, Old Faithful, "Powerful, Gentle, Unafraid," and "The Madonna of the Wild." All with black and white illustrations throughout.1921 and '23 in poor condition with wrappers detached from text block; five early volumes in good condition with significant wear to wrappers. All the rest is very good to fine. The Haynes Guide was the quintessential guidebook to Yellowstone National Park for generations of tourists. Published almost annually for 77 years through 1966 (four years after Jack died), the advice dispensed included listings of regulations ("Mounted men on meeting a passenger team on a grade will halt on the outer side until the team passes..."); descriptions of flora and fauna ("The Buffalo, or American Bison, which but a few years ago grazed in countless thousands on the Western plans, are now counted in tens; only a score or more remain in their natural state..."); a recommended auto tour of the Grand Loop and beyond, with history and geology of popular sites; poems ("The Yellowstone Park and How It Was Named," William Tod Helmuth, 1894); specialized "lingo," (Dude and Dudine, Queen of the Mulligan, Barn Dog and Pillow Puncher, to name a few); and much more. A great resource for tracking how Yellowstone tourism changed through the mid-20th century.
