USA The Bobbs-Merrill Company. 1948 1st.. 5.5 x 8.0 inches. In maroon cloth covers with gilt to spine and front. Maps to endpapers. In very good condition. Spine slightly faded. Small marks to back and along edge of spine. Author’s personal inscription to ‘Pug’ Ismay on half title page. Else a clean and tight copy. 284 pp. Maps to endpapers. The author was a journalist working for the New York Post and was sent to cover the volatile situation in Palestine as the British Mandate came to and end. He also took the opportunity to visit other Middle Easter countries and there are chapters on Cairo, Tehran, Bagdad, Athens and Istanbul. The author’s personal inscription is to ‘Pug’ Ismay, Winston Churchill's chief military assistant during the Second World War, and the first Secretary General of NATO from 1952 to 1957.
