About This Item

1717. Near Fine. Handwritten parchment deed (51 x 50 cm.), folded. On 30 April 1717 William Pearse of London and James Pearse of the parish of St. Clements Dane sold to Richard Hill of Hawkestone, Salop (Shropshire), the right to make appointments to the parsonages of Ditchingham, Forncett, Starston, and Alborough in Norfolk County. Signed by William and James Pearse with their seals. With an armorial embellishment of the first letter. Three blue stamps in the margin and one royal stamp on the outside. Richard Hill (1655-1727), known as "The Great Hill," served as a diplomat during the War of the Spanish Succession; as envoy to Maximilian II Emanuel, Elector of Bavaria in Brussels, and to the duke of Savoy in Turin; and as ambassador to The Hague. After returning to England he served as Lord of the Treasury (1699-1702); as a Commissioner of the Admiralty (1702-08); and as Counsellor to Prince George of Denmark, the Prince Consort of Queen Anne. In Near Fine Condition: minor loss of vellum at end of fold at one edge without loss of writing; otherwise, clean and crisp.
