1885. Very Good. 1 handwritten letter, dated New Brighton, Staten Island, Jan. 25, 1885, to Darwin C. Parey, editor of the Eagle, Pittsfield, Mass., signed "J. C. Frémont." The editor of the Eagle (possibly meant to be Darwin C. Perry) had requested a photograph of Fremont, who says that they did not have any, but when they did they would send photographs of himself and his wife. John Charles Frémont/Fremont (1813-1890) was an American explorer and soldier. While in command of the Department of the West for the Union during the Civil War, he freed the slaves in that territory, resulting in being relieved off that command by President Lincoln. After the war he served as Governor of Arizona from 1878 to 1881, when he retired to Staten Island. In Very Good Condition: light creasing; smudge in upper portion; otherwise, clean and solid.
