American graphic artist and paper maker Susan Hockaday's copy, signed by her "Hockaday" at the top of the front endpaper.

Laid into the book is a two page autograph letter addressed to Susan Hockaday signed by the artist Magaret Kennard Johnson who created work with handmade paper. In her letter, Johnson mentions that she is enclosing samples of fine paper from Japan: "Enclosed are fragments of the gossamer paper I mentioned to you that is almost extinct in Japan..." signed "Love Maggi". Enclosed is a sleeve titled "Very Fine paper from japan (M. Johnson November 1985)" containing 8 fragments of the colorful fine gossamer paper which Johnson mentions in her letter.

With the intent of becoming a medical artist Susan Hockaday first worked in Cardiovascular Surgery at Yale, where she drew details observed during open heart surgery. She subsequently went on to create her own artwork which explored the structures and patterns or the natural world. Learning to make paper on which she could produce her prints in 1979, she went on to produce very thin papers in the Japanese tradition which she could then assemble into layers which conveyed those layers she observed in woods and streams.
