About This Item

London: John Murray, 1913. Cloth. Good. 7.5" by 5". Not Stated. An early twentieth century tourists guide to Japan, profusely illustrated and complete with numerous folding colour maps. The ninth edition of this work, containing thirty colour folding maps, plans, plates and illustrations, including a folding colour map in a pocket to the rear of the work. Collated, complete.A travel guide to Japan and the island of Formosa, this is from the famous series of 'Murray's Handbooks for Travellers', a series of travel guide books published in London by John Murray beginning in 1836. According to scholar James Buzard, the Murray style 'exemplified the exhaustive rational planning that was as much an ideal of the emerging tourist industry as it was of British commercial and industrial organization generally'. These works are thus a fascinating insight into both the mentality of those who would have purchased them, and the locations in question. With 38 pages of contemporary advertisements to the rear of the work, and further advertisements to pastedowns and endpapers. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Discolouration to back strip. Cloth fraying to head and tail of spine, and tail of front board. Internally, firmly bound. Former owners inscription to head of title page and fore edge of text block. Pages generally clean and bright. Tape repairs to reverse of folding map in rear pocket. Good
