A very neat copy of Volume 1 (of 2) only of this popular 19th century German herbal
The attractive hand-coloured engravings by F. Kirchner. The subjects in this volume are fruits, spices, herbs, hallucinogenics, poisons, roots, etc. Plant names in German and Latin on the plate.
Artus's handbook of general medicinal-pharmaceutical plants was published in two volumes from 1846 to 1885.
With foreword to the 6th (1881) and 7th (1885) editions, 15pp preface, 334 pages of text and 132 hand-coloured botanical engravings, and 5pp index. Title page missing, but half-title present.
Willibald Artus (1809-1880) was a pharmacist in Weimar, before moving to Jena in 1840 to become professor of chemistry and pharmacy at the university.
Paper-covered boards with gilt leather title label on spine, paper chipped along front hinge, text pages starting to brown as usual, but all 132 hand-coloured plates clean and fresh.
