About This Item

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1874. [256]pp. First Edition. Bound in green cloth. 8vo., large folding frontispiece view; modestly illustrated with vignette engravings throughout. Rear board with extensive but mild small bubbling to cloth; a very good and clean copy with bright gilt to spine and upper cover.

Story, mission, progress, and multiple descriptions and viewpoints of life at Virginia's Hampton Institute for African Americans and Native Americans; this title published almost a decade after the close of the American Civil War. The content is varied, from a brief section on the Ku Klux Klan to testimonials: one being from a formerly enslaved woman who came to Hampton to be educated; another being a public address by a young woman graduate. From page 171 and onwards, the text is devoted to an early collection of "Cabin and Plantation Songs" with scored music and lyrics printed. The spine is lettered in gilt: "Hampton and Its Students / With the Slave Songs."
