On May 10th, 1969 the US Army 101st Airborne Division, the 9th US US Marine Regiment and the 3rd Regiment ARVN, moved into the A Shau Valley in the Central Highlands. The valley was a major terminus of the Ho Chi Minh Trail and had been used by the North Vietnamese Army as a staging post for their 1968 attack on Hue during the Tet Offensive. The next day the 3rd Battalion, US 187th Infantry assaulted the lower reaches of Hill 937, Ap Bia Mountain, otherwise known as Hamburger Hill.
