About This Item
1822. SCOTT, Sir Walter. HALIDON HILL: A Dramatic Sketch, from Scottish History. Edinburgh: Printed for Archibald Constable and Co., Edinburgh; and Hurst, Robinson, and Co. London. 1822. First edition, second impression, first issue. 109,[3] pp., + 8 pp. Constable & Co. catalogue. 8vo., dun paper wrappers with title printed to front wrap, untrimmed. Light dust-soiling and foxing at untrimmed edges of text leaves, and some faint pencil bracketing at the inner margin, else clean; several dog-eared leaves near the end. Wrappers show moderate soil all over and some light rubbing, chipping at spine, particularly at heel and crown, and a glue stain at crown. The whole shows some gentle creasing at the top edge. Very good plus. Todd and Bowden, p. 567: "As Scott explained to Byron the day after issue, this sketch was intended for Joanna Baillie's forthcoming Collection of Poems but, as it soon 'ran out of bounds', was now published separately. The author wished he could have dedicated it to Byron, 'your Lordship being in lineal descent half a Gordon as I am a fourth part a Swinton.'" (Todd & Bowden 158Ab).
