About This Item

J. Stevens Arms & Toole Co. , 1908. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Dustjacket as Issued. Previous owner name. A small area of fraying to corner tips, some light rubbing at spine. Written for the novice or young man, with discussion of various techniques for hunting of waterfowl and upland game and a variety of wilderness and woodcraft skills. With illustrations throughout, including a general ad for J. Stevens Arms and a one page ad for the .25 Caliber Stevens Repeating Gallery Rifle No. 80. The publisher also offers the young hunters to organize a Stevens Rifle Club in which the company would help set up and promote. Bellmore Browne was an Artist, Explorer, Hunter, Writer, and Mountaineer. He made three attempts at a first ascent of Denali, and once conceded defeat only 125 feet from the summit of Mount McKinley. Browne studied at the New York School of Art and the Académie Julian in Paris. His best-known paintings show scenes of Alaska, the Northwest, and the Canadian Rockies. A lifetime hunter and member of the Boone & Crockett Club, he was one of the earliest proponents for the creation of Mount McKinley National Park. Daniel Carter "Uncle Dan" Beard (1850 – 1941) was an American illustrator, author, youth leader, and social reformer who founded the Sons of Daniel Boone in 1905, which Beard later merged with the Boy Scouts of America. Stevens Arms was founded by Joshua Stevens in 1864 as J. Stevens & Co. Their earliest product was a tip-up action single shot pistol. The company introduced the .22 Long Rifle round and made a number of rifle, shotgun, and target pistol designs. By 1902, they were advertising themselves as "the largest producers of sporting arms in the world". They were purchased by New England Westinghouse on May 28, 1915, and again by Savage Arms on April 1, 1920. As a division of Savage, Stevens continued to produce firearms at their Chicopee Falls facility until 1960 when the plant was torn down and Stevens production was moved into other Savage facilities. Savage dropped the Stevens name in 1991, but revived it in 1999 and still uses it today for a number of its low cost rifles and shotguns. A scare title, with unique author and publisher associations in the sporting field.
