About This Item

Singapore: Papineau Advertising,, 1963. The 1963 edition of Papineau's long-running guide to Singapore, with the large city map in excellent condition, and the first to be published after the proclamation of the Federation of Malaysia. The Papineau guides are uncommon and picturesque windows onto the post-1945 golden age of mass tourism when the region was developing into a modern, vibrant travel destination. Chapters discuss the founding and recent history of Singapore, as well as its geography, flora and fauna, culture, transportation links, shopping scene, and scenic sights. "For tourists, this is a shopping paradise, set in a background of steel spires, concrete canyons, softened by the rustling of palm fronds and a turquoise sea, lit by the rays of a tropical sun" (p. 91). The guide ends with a 30-page introduction to Malaysia, celebrating the new nation's high standard of living, as well as its thriving economy and bustling major cities. Octavo. Original blue pictorial card wrappers, spine and front cover lettered in yellow and white, final 33 leaves printed on blue paper. Large map of Singapore (unfolding to 720 x 940 mm) prepared by Singapore Improvement Trust (Planning Department), 2 folding maps of postal districts, illustrations and advertisements throughout. Traces of old ownership label on first leaf. Wrappers bright and lightly worn and creased overall, crease along spine, first leaf clipped in upper corner, staining at head of first few leaves, maps well-preserved with couple of creases where sometime carelessly refolded, the larger map with minor split along one fold and a couple of small old faint stains, contents clean. A very good copy.
