Glasgow: W R M'Phun, 1825 second edition. xii and 222 pages. Modern boards. (For other books about the Napoleonic Wars please search my stock using the keyword napoleonic.)
This is the first of Sergeant Donaldson's three autobiographical volumes which he began writing to finance his university studies when he was head clerk of the Glasgow Military District and determined to become a surgeon. Recollections, which ends at the battle of Sabugal, was first published in 1821. This second edition was a reissue to accompany his second volume (not included here) The War in the Peninsula. A third volume on his peace service in Ireland came out in 1828. Donaldson attained his degree but failed to make a success of life as a surgeon in Oban and went to Paris to resume his studies. He died in 1830 leaving a widow and three surviving children for whose support a combined version of the three books was published by his friends. This portmanteau volume was also titled Recollections of an Eventful Life. It was kept… Read More

Misleadingly titled since 'Dishonest John' Colborne was invalided back to Cairo before the Kordofan expedition got under way. Still he was the only survivor of Hicks' staff. In later years he hung around Cairo scratching a living from journalism and was described by Wingate as 'looking like a second-rate Jupiter in reduced circumstances'. Description:
Trumansburg, NY: Out of Step Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 2016. Numbered Edition; First Printing. Pamphlet. The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows…) that led to me writing the poem "Quartering." Which was informed by them, of course, and by all the rooms I'm in, and by imagining what is really required of all the caregivers I love. It's a thought experiment: if we tore down the barracks at military hospitals and offered incentives for Americans in the surrounding neighborhoods to quarter injured service members, what would the honest instructions… Read More
