About This Item

Singapore: Papineau Advertising,, 1963. Second edition, greatly expanded from the 1962 first, of this tourist guide published on the eve of the formal proclamation of Malaysia, here with the maps in splendid condition. WorldCat records eight institutional copies combined of the first two editions, none in the UK. Endorsed by the Federation of Malaya Department of Tourism, this booklet advertises Kuala Lumpur's many tourist attractions and distinctive cosmopolitan culture. A historical essay explores the region's transformation over one hundred years into a modern, stable city, celebrating the triumph over "communist terrorism" during the Emergency and the visit of the Duke of Edinburgh in 1956 in preparation for independence. Octavo. Original green illustrated wrappers, title to spine in white and yellow, front cover lettered in white and orange, pp. 175-202 printed on green paper. Large maps of Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya both unfolding to approx. 800 x 700 mm, full-page map of Federation of Malaya, advertisements and illustrations throughout, some content printed in colour. Wrappers bright with a little wear and creasing overall, contents clean and bright, maps pleasingly well-preserved with just a small closed stub tear not crossing neatline to map of Kuala Lumpur.
