About This Item
China: , [c.1980]. An exquisite early album of seals, paintings and calligraphy by "Guren" (Person of the Valley), the alias of the contemporary artist Xiao Huirong. Today, Xiao is a leading flower painter, and his works have sold for up to half a million US dollars at auction. The artworks in this album draw inspiration from the poem "A Visit to Qiantang Lake in the Spring" by the celebrated Tang dynasty lyricist Bai Juyi (772-846). The poem is Bai's ode to the beauty of Qiantang in full flower, with orioles and swallows completing the picturesque scene. Xiao, also known as Sui Fai Wing, was born in 1946 in Guangdong Province. In 1981, he moved to Hong Kong and cultivated a reputation as a specialist painter of flowers, landscapes, and figures. His art has been featured in the National Art Exhibition of the People's Republic of China seven consecutive times, and he has held over 50 solo exhibitions in China and abroad in locations such as the United Nations headquarters. Large octavo, concertina-style. Original decorative silk brocade bevelled boards, manuscript calligraphic title label with red seals, silver-speckled blue endpapers. Original calligraphy, landscape painting, and seal impressions. Brocade bright, residue on front pastedown where ticket removed, touch of spotting and offsetting internally. A near-fine example.
