About This Item

Oxford: 'Printed by H. Daniel' [The Daniel Press], 1890. Hardcover. Very Good. Oxford, 'Printed by H. Daniel' [The Daniel Press], 1890 (corrected reprint)/ 1889. Small quarto, [ii], 84 pages. Vellum-backed plain papered boards, lettered in gilt on the spine; edges uncut; covers a little foxed, rubbed and marked, with trifling wear to the corners; endpapers and adjacent leaves browned and foxed; edges and a few gatherings a little foxed and spotted; a very good copy. Number 57 of only 100 copies. 'This is a corrected reprint (of a hundred copies), occasioned by the speedy sale of ... the first (enlarged) edition, the demand for the book, and a piracy in America. It is the first Daniel book entirely in black letter and is well printed ... A very desirable volume to possess, and the only example of a second edition in the Daniel Press ... The binding is light blue boards, and on the vellum back 'Growth of Love - Bridges', this being the first (accidental) acknowledgement of authorship' (Madan: 'Daniel Press', page 104). The first edition, containing only 24 sonnets (rather than the 79 in the Daniel Press editions), was published in 1876 in an edition of only 22 copies.

Madan 20.
