San Francisco: Grabhorn Press, 1929. Limited Edition. Wraps. Very good +. Angelo, Valenti. One of approx. 30 copies, folio size, [10] unnumbered leaves, signed by Edwin Grabhorn and Valenti Angelo. A keepsake offered to members of the Zamorano Club at the joint Roxburghe-Zamorano Club meeting, held in October, 1929, printed by The Grabhorn Press and "Assembled for Members of the Zamorano Club". As is written in the foreword by Ed Grabhorn, "For the past few years there has been accumulating extra pages from various books. It has occured to us that a few of these....might be of some interest to you". They close by stating "[t]his seclusion [of printing "in overalls"] has created such a timidity that while the honor conferred on Mr. Angelo & myself cannot be ignored, yet the fear of having to make an after dinner speech has frightened us into further seclusion"; beneath are the signatures of both Edwin Grabhorn and Valenti Angelo, with what appears to be the date of "Oct (?) 29" written in at the bottom of a lovely multi-line flourish beneath Valenti Angelo's name. The "seclusion" comment was a bit tongue-in-cheek, as their schedules simply did not permit the two men to travel to Los Angeles for the joint meeting. The specimens included are from 1926-1929, taken from nine books that both Valenti Angelo and Edwin Grabhorn worked on. Those works are: "The Letter of Amerigo Vespucci," 1926; "Oscar Wilde's Salome," 1927; "The Book of Ruth," 1927; "Two Unpublished Manuscripts of A.C. Swinburne," 1927; "The Voiage and Travaile of Sir John Maundevile, Kt.," 1928; "The Scarlet Letter," 1928; "The Plantin-Moretus Museum," 1929; "Reglamento (A book of laws for Spanish California)," 1929; and "Relation of Alvar Nunez Cabeca de Vaca," 1929; each specimen is accompanied by an amusing commentary by Edwin Grabhorn. ___DESCRIPTION: Original grey printed paper wrappers, hand-sewn, illustration on the front wrap previously used for the title page of "Reglamento Para El Gobierno de la Provincia de Californias", with 14 tipped-in specimens printed in a variety of styles and colors, all on the same grey paper as the wrappers; Jansen type, handset, folio size (just under 15" by 10"), [10] unnumbered leaves, limited edition, one of approx. 30 copies, signed by Edwin Grabhorn and Valenti Angelo. ___CONDITION: Almost near fine, the sewn binding solid, internally bright and complete; some minor overall edgewear and minor age toning to the edges and some stray light soil marks to the wrappers; a very good, solid copy of a scarce piece of Grabhorn Press / Valenti Angelo / Roxburghe-Zamorano ephemera. ___CITATION: Grabhorn Bibliography no. 125. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard shipping charge does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
