About This Item
Vienna and Leipzig: Universal-Edition A.G., 1922. Folio. 42 pages. Original color pictorial wrappers. Modern ownership signature on first page. Lower-outer corner bumped, wrappers edgeworn, else very good.
Sheet music for eleven piano pieces in the modernist "Grotesque" style by contemporary composers including Béla Bartók, Ernst Krenek, Karol Rathaus, Rudolph Réti, Alois Hába, Wilhelm Grosz, and Egon Wellesz, several of whose compositions were deemed "degenerate art" during the Nazi era. Compiler Carl Seelig provides an introduction on the nature of the Grotesque in German, French, and English. The cover features a design by the renowned Vienna-based artist and puppeteer Richard Teschner (1879-1948), featuring a Harlequin-like contortionist.
Grotesken-Album is one of the first publications of the music of Karol Rathaus (1895-1954), the long under-appreciated composer. Rathus warmly inscribed and signed the present copy in the year of publication.
