About This Item

First printing. Book has very light fading to the edges of the spine. Price-clipped dust jacket, which is protected in an archival sleeve, has very light creasing to the edges, a faint creasing line down the back cover and very light tanning inside the cover. Like all good coaching inns, The Green Man is said to boast a resident ghost: Dr Thomas Underhill, a notorious seventeenth-century practitioner of black arts and sexual deviancy. However, the landlord, Maurice Allington, is the sole witness to the renaissance of the malevolent Underhill. Led by an anxious desire to vindicate his sanity, Allington strives to uncover the key to Underhill's satanic powers. All while the skeletons in Allington's own cupboard rattle to get out.

During the 1950s, after the publication of Lucky Jim, Kingsley Amis was known as one of The Angry Young Men. Some of the of the anger may be gone, but the wit is still there. This a funny, literate and satirical ghost story, although the ghost isn't the protagonist's main problem. That seems to be to find a way to get his wife, his girlfriend, and himself, in the same bed at the same time...
