About This Item

A. S. Barnes and Co., Inc. : New York, 1968. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Great Works of Craftsmanship, by Raymond Lister, Published by A. S. Barnes and Co., Inc. 1968, stated First American edition, Library of Congress#: 68-14406, Hard bound, Excellent condition (jacket chipping and other wear at edges). The world of craftsmanship is a world of hammering, of fire, of noise; it is a world of sensitive fingers; it is a world of a thousand working tools of delicate sensation felt by thumb or finger; a world of accuracy of vision. It is a world which deals with some of the summits reached by the craftsman, in which he has succeeded in combining style, artistry, and dexterous workmanship to express the spirit of his time. Raymond Lister has written a notable book on craftsmanship in which he reflects the spirit of many times. He has selected a variety of masterpieces of the craftsmans labors in many periods, from ancient Egypt to the modern era. His purpose is to describe the object itself, its setting in place and in time, and the craftsmanship involved in making it. The masterpieces Lister has chosen as found in the table of contents are: The throne of Tutankamen; Silver Dekadrachms of Euainetos and Kimon; Notre Dame de la Belle Verriere, Chartres; The Syon Cope; An embossed casque by the Brothers Negroli; Two book bindings of Samuel Mearne; The birdcage at Melbourne Hall; The Palladian Bridge at Wilton; The angry harlequin by J. J. Kandler; A lacquer ink-stone box by Korin; The penny black postage stamp; and two engraved goblets Laurence Whistler. The book is approximately 5 X 8 inches in size and contains 206 pages plus several drawings and pages of black and white illustrations. The jacket price is $5. Another copy of the book is currently offered on the Internet at Old Book Company for $24.
