New York: Selmar Hess Publisher, 1894. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 12" by 9.5". Various. An beautifully illustrated set of these sketches of notable figures. Collated: Complete in 8 Volumes. With 204 photogravure, wood-engraving and typogravure full page plates including a frontispiece to each volume. A set of short biographies of notable figures with illustrations throughout. Includes entries for figures such as Dickens, Socrates, Darwin, Voltaire, Beethoven and many more. Volumes I & II: Soldiers and Sailors Volumes III & IV: Statesmen and Sages Volumes V & Vi: Workmen and Heroes Volumes VII & VIII: Artists and Authors. Edited by Charles Francis Horne, an American author who wrote more than one hundred works particularly of history. In half morocco binding with gilt detailing. Externally, slightly rubbed at extremities and joints. Joints still firm. Hinges slightly strained to volumes II, III, V and VI but still firm. Endpaper loosening to volume II. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright with the occasional spot and handing mark but otherwise clean. Very Good Indeed
