About This Item

Two vols. 8vo, orig. printed wrappers, orig. stitching. Shanghai: Commercial Press, 1935.

Facsimile edition of this work on the conflict between the Jurchen Jin and the Chinese Song. The texts, produced during the Jin empire, comprise chronologically arranged state documents in various genres, including letters between the Jin and the Song. "Some materials do not have counterparts on the Song side, and since they originate with Jin writers, they can be used comparatively alongside Song sources. The collection is of very great value for research on the history of the Jin-Song conflict" (Yao & Yao, Tang-Song lishi biji luncong, 726-27).

For a long time, there were no printed editions of the Record. When the Qing court scholars put together the great manuscript library Siku quanshu 四庫全書 [Complete Books of the Four Repositories] in the 1770s, they recovered a manuscript edition from the Yongle dadian 永樂大典 [The Great Canon of the (Reign of) Eternal Happiness], a then little used manuscript encyclopedia. Woodcut editions were issued in 1809, 1844, and twice in 1935: in the third installment of Sibu congkan 四部叢刊 [Serial Publications from the Four Bibliographical Categories] and in the first installment of Congshu jicheng 叢書集成 [Complete Serial Collection] (Yao & Yao, 727).

Our book belongs to the first of the 1935 reprints. It is a facsimile made on the basis of "Mr. Fu of Jiang'an's 江安 Shuangjian lou 雙鑑樓 [Double-Mirrored Pavilion] manuscript copy by Qian Zunwang 錢遵王." Qian Zunwang (Qian Zeng 錢曾, 1629-1701) was a famous book collector. The competing edition in Congshu jicheng, by contrast, is typeset.

Fine set.
