About This Item

New York: Orange Judd Company, 1899. A New Edition. 190 x 125 mm. (7 1/2 x 4 3/4"). xi, [1], 11-211 pp., [4] leaves (ads).
Publisher's terra cotta-colored blind-embossed buckram, smooth spine with gilt titling, floral endpapers. With frontispiece and numerous illustrations in the text, one of these full-page. Gabler G16220 (First Edition). ◆A hint of browning to edges of leaves, but a very fine copy, clean and fresh internally, in an unworn binding.

First published in 1852, this influential viticultural work is full of practical advice for American growers, providing a month-by-month calendar of operations. As noted by Gabler, "Chorlton's guides to cultivation of European grapes under glass were based on his experiences as gardener to J. C. Green of Staten Island. Chorlton gives a long list of European grapes suitable for indoor cultivation and suggests the American varieties isabella, catawba, diana, and concord for outdoors." Though practical guides such as this were often put through some use, the present copy is an exception and has survived in an excellent state of preservation inside and out..

About Phillip J. Pirages Fine Books and Medieval Manuscripts

Phillip J. Pirages Fine Books an Manuscripts was established in 1978 on a ping pong table in a basement in Kalamazoo, Michigan. From the beginning, its founder was willing to sell a range of material, but over the years, the business has gravitated toward historical artifacts that are physically attractive in some way--illuminated material, fine bindings, books printed on vellum, fore-edge paintings, beautiful typography and paper, impressive illustration. Today, the company still sells a wide range of things, from (scruffy) ninth century leaves to biblical material from all periods to Wing and STC imprints to modern private press books to artists' bindings. While we are forgiving about condition when something is of considerable rarity, we always try to obtain the most attractive copies possible of whatever we offer for sale.
