About This Item

Boston, MA: Little, Brown and Company, 1969. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7? - 9?" tall. Little, Brown and Company. 1969. Volume III of the three-volume biography of U. S. Grant. Hardcover Book in Good Condition. Without dust jacket, as issued. Maps by Samuel H. Bryant. Gray buckram cloth over spine with blue title panel, gilt titled, blue buckram cloth over boards. There are white chalk like spots on the front cover--see photographs with this listing. Sewn binding with end bands, tight, solid and square. Top edge of text block is spotty. Pages are pristine. Looks unused--even thought there are the defects of the spotting. The first volume of the three -volume biography of Captain Sam Grant was written by the brilliant historian and biographer Lloyd Lewis who died before publication. After searching for a writer and historian well qualified to complete the trilogy project, Mrs. Lewis recommended Bruce Catton for the second volume and he used Mr. Lewis notes and his additional research to complete the second volume. An ideal choice, as no other living author re-creates this period of history more expertly than Mr. Catton. And now here is his Volume III. 556 pp. Notes, Bibliography, Index. 8vo. 1969, Little, Brown and Company.

Synopsis

A classic work of military history, follows the enigmatic commander in chief of the Union forces through the last year and a half of the Civil War. It is both a revelatory portrait of Ulysses S. Grant and the dramatic story of how the war was won.
