About This Item

New York: Grand Street Press, 1981. Limited Edition: 1 of only 100 special numbered copies. Wraps. Near Fine. 185pp.(+ ads in back). 22cm. Softcover. Tan matte perfectbound wraps. Limited edition of first issue ever of "one of the most revered literary magazines of the postwar era."* (*NYT Ben Sonnenberg obit). From the last, otherwise blank page of the magazine: "This printing of Grand Street consists of 2100 copies of which 100 copies are numbered and on special paper." This is followed by a stamped number "15". Book Condition: covers show several faint dents and dings, some discoloring at spine end and faint splashes to fore edge, else fine. A rare special numbered copy of the premier issue of one of the "most revered literary magazines of the postwar era", in altogether lovely condition. Contributors to this historic issue included: Alice Munro, Ted Hughes, W.S. Merwin, Ruth Fainlight, Claes Andersson Rika Lesser, Penelope Gilliatt, P.J. Kavanagh, James Michie, James Salter, John Hollander, Terence Kilmartin, Christopher Ricks, and Northrop Frye. Grand Street was founded as a quarterly by Ben Sonnenberg in 1981. When Jean Stein became editor and publisher in 1990, the magazine's format changed to encompass visual art, and we began actively to seek out international authors and artists to introduce to our readers. With Grand Street 48 ("Oblivion"), our issues became theme-driven, providing cohesion for a dynamic collection of ideas, styles, and genres. The last issue of the magazine was published in 2004.
