Otherwise a respectable copy of this collection of classic Steinbeck short stories that includes The Chrysanthemums, The White Quail, Flight, The Snake, Breakfast, The Raid, The Harness, The Vigilante, Johnny Bear, The Murder, St. Katy The Virgin, the Complete Red Pony, The Leader of the People. There were only 8000 copies of this title published in the First Edition.

This edition was printed on 23 June 1899 and was the first to reveal the author's identity, putting the name Oscar Wilde in square brackets under his cell number on the title page. The first UK edition (first printing), issued five months after the US edition. 8vo. 280pp. Blue smooth-weave cloth lettered in red at the spine with a small black-stamped falcon design to the backstrip and to the upper corner of the front board. Publisher's blue top edge stain, very slightly patchy. Just a trace of light bruising to the spine ends and a touch of very light spotting to the fore edge, with a little further spotting to the half-title, title page, and one or two further preliminary and concluding leaves. Free endpapers lightly browned and a tiny bump to the tips of the two lower corners. A touch of very light soiling to occasional leaf margins and, once or twice, to the text block. A very good copy. No dust wrapper. The first and only full-length novel featuring Hammett's celebrated gumshoe Sam Spade. Cleveland, 1966. Faint toning. 11 x 8.5 inches. Title leaf of translucent paper with an original drawing by levy. Mimeographed. 12 pages, on rectos only. Stapled wrappers, front cover with original ink scarab drawing by the author mounted. One of 33 copies. A scarce publication by one of levy's unnamed presses, being Edouard Naville's translation of 'The Litany of Ra.' The large original drawing of a scarab on the cover is reflective of levy's interest in the symbol, which he used as the title of his collection 'Scarab Poems.' Though neither his name, nor that of one of his presses, appears in the text, this has all the hallmarks of levy's important mimeographed books, and appears less frequently on the market than others. Published in 'The Buddhist Third Class Junkmail Oracle' and anthologized in 'The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry,' ed. Alan Kaufman, New York: Thunder's Mouth Press, 1999. This typescript shows two corrections made in levy's hand - adding "in cleveland" at the end of the sub-title and changing the last words of the second stanza - that subsequently appeared in the published editions: See 'The Buddhist Third Class Junkmail Oracle,' edited by Mike Golden, NY: Seven stories Press, 1999, p. 199." Original manuscript and typescript material by the famed, and infamous, Cleveland poet is scarce, with only two pieces appearing at auction in the past 50 years.

Steinbeck's first book published by Viking, a short story collection of all-star stories that includes Flight which appears for the first time as well as such Steinbeck classics as The Chrysanthemums, The Snake, Breakfast, The Harness, Johnny Bear, and all portions of The Red Pony, Goldstone & Payne A11a, Morrow 90, this is one of 8,000 copies (as opposed to 50,000 copies for The Grapes of Wrath and more than 100,000 copies for East of Eden), the dust jacket is illustrated by Elmer Hader who also illustrated dust jackets for Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath and The Winter of Our Discontent. While this copy has some of the inevitable age-darkening to the book spine, it is far less than usual and the book itself is quite tight, minor soiling to jacket, fine.

Muscatine, The Prairie Press, 1938, first edition.. One of just 490 hardcover copies of Stegner's elusive third book, color first letters of each chapter and with the running heads at the side of pages, with red page numbers, this is a great private press production, the book was dedicated to Philip and Margaret Gray, the friends of Stegner who were the models for the characters in his acclaimed novel, Crossing to Safety, Colberg A3. Clean and bright, at least very nearly fine.
